2024: Current and Future Status of DEI in the Workplace

Presented by: Jenna Day M.A. and Kellis Borek J.D, Archbright

In June 2023, the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action programs in college admissions. Since then, DEI programs have been legally challenged at local, state, and federal levels. Further, in this election year DEI programs in the workplace face criticism and ignite misunderstandings. A combination of these issues leaves employers unsure of the future of DEI in the workplace. This session addresses how employers may continue DEI initiatives that are legal and effective at fostering belonging and inclusion. Finally, the facilitators will highlight the importance of continued DEI efforts and how HR leaders can articulate those reasons with their organization

In this session you will learn about the latest legal developments in workplace DEI, strategies for employers to maintain DEI without legal risks, the business benefits of DEI programs, and the connection between belonging, inclusion, and employee retention and engagement.

Insights, Tips, and Tools You Need to Navigate Difficult Conversations

Presented by Carol Bowser, Conflict Management Strategies

Who likes having difficult conversations? No one. Ok, there might be some outliers out there, but very few people like having to have a “difficult conversation.” However, we are expected to have difficult conversations with colleagues, employees, or clients. We are judged not only on our ability to have difficult conversation BUT ON OUR WILLINGNESS have difficult conversations. Having tools and language to use helps- a lot..

In this session you will gain frameworks, tools, and language to handle challenging conversations, including understanding common approaches, universal themes, and strategies to de-escalate high-emotion situations. They will also learn to differentiate between sensitive and difficult conversations.
